About Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail

The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail (LHHT) stretches approximately 70 miles through the rugged terrain of southwestern Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands, an area defined by steep ridges, deep river valleys, and mixed hardwood forests. This long-distance trail runs from Ohiopyle State Park to the Conemaugh Gorge near Johnstown and lies primarily within the Forbes State Forest and several state parks, making it a key component of the region’s protected natural areas. The trail traverses diverse landscapes including dense forest, rocky outcrops, and open meadows and offers access to numerous waterfalls, mountain overlooks, and historically significant sites such as remnants of early industrial activity and Native American heritage. Ecologically, the route passes through rich hardwood forests dominated by oak, maple, and hemlock, supporting a variety of wildlife such as black bears, white-tailed deer, and numerous bird species. The trail was established in the 1970s and is maintained by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources in partnership with local hiking organizations. Recreational activities center around multi-day backpacking trips, day hikes, wildlife observation, and photography. Several trail segments intersect with state park facilities, offering campgrounds and amenities for hikers. The trail’s rugged terrain, steep ascents and descents, and well-marked path attract outdoor enthusiasts seeking a strenuous and rewarding Appalachian plateau experience. Visitors also enjoy proximity to regional attractions including Ohiopyle Falls, Kentuck Knob historic home, and Fort Necessity National Battlefield. The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail is a vital outdoor corridor that combines natural splendor with cultural history, providing a long-distance wilderness experience within Pennsylvania’s forested mountains.
